Our Spot On ABC News & Why Done Is Better Than Perfect…
I have a dirty little secret for you.
None of us have it all figured out. Even when we look the part. Even when an ABC News Reporter thinks our story is newsworthy and brings a film crew with her to ask us how we turned our dreams into action.
A couple of weeks ago #Delhi2013 participant, Cecily Jackson-Zapata, and I had the pleasure of meeting Denise Dador of ABC Channel 7 News in Los Angeles. Denise asked insightful questions and did a wonderful job of telling our story. On Monday, we made the afternoon news in LA and my hope is that we helped at least one other survivor feel less alone with this piece: ABC Channel 7 – ‘A Fresh Chapter’ Helps Cancer Survivors Heal.
Am I excited about this opportunity to tell our story? Absolutely. In fact, I’m probably more amazed than you might think. Let’s put this into perspective. I grew up on a gravel road in the middle of Northern British Columbia. (For all of my international friends, B.C. is the most Western Province in Canada). As a kid, our family had a layover in LA once, and I may as well have landed on the moon because it seemed like the busiest, most intimidating city on the planet. You better believe that little girl had no illusions of ever being on TV, let alone being interviewed on the LA news.
Yet, there I was. Answering questions in my new friend Lissa’s living room and praying I could articulate the story in a way that served the A Fresh Chapter and touched other cancer survivors.
When I watched the piece, I couldn’t help but smile at the magic of television. You don’t see the meltdown I had the day before because the steep learning curve to getting sustainable funding for the foundation had me almost hyperventilating in my friend’s living room. You don’t see me kicking myself for not nailing every single line perfectly. Instead, you see the smiling girl in the pink shirt who seems to have it all together.
Here’s the thing about perfect. It’s an illusion. I know you probably know this, but it doesn’t stop any of us from wanting to get “there”. I spent last weekend at the World Domination Summit in Portland where I heard accomplished people in their field talk about failure and fear. Tess Vigeland, a radio celebrity who recently left her role at NPR Marketplace stood on the stage and confessed to not having the answers for what the hell she is going to do with the rest of her life. Then – something crazy happened – 3000 people stood up and cheered because her fears and imperfections made the rest of feel normal.
Over the last two years of dream chasing and foundation building, here is what I’ve learned: No matter how shiny things look from the outside, nothing is perfect. So, go do the thing you feel you’re meant to do. (You can even click to tweet that.)
Go take a photography class, learn how to salsa, start a blog, or launch a movement. You’ll never do it perfectly. You’ll probably fail just as often as you succeed. But, as one of my best friends, Molly Huber, said to me on a hike in the North Shore Mountains yesterday, “Terri – done is better than perfect.” Amen to that.
What do you think? Do you believe done is better than perfect? Has someone inspired you to move closer to your dreams, even if you don’t have all of the answers? I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments….

Fabulous post! So happy I got to meet you while you were in LA. And for what it’s worth, everybody, Terri and I didn’t even “tawk” about this TV interview! She mentioned having done a TV news piece that week, but didn’t elaborate — and I didn’t ask. To me, that’s a sign that you’re really connecting with someone — when you can *not* talk about the obvious stuff, let the big stuff fall away, and just talk about what matters most.
xoxo
Renn – Thank you so much for your comment! It was so wonderful to connect with you in LA and to talk about what matters the most. Thank you for being you. T xoxo
Wow – amazing post!! It reminds me of a post that Nancy of Nancy’s Point reposted on Facebook this week. Many of us have transferred this need for perfection to cancer (and other serious challenges) because we feel the need to be good, positive people. Check it out if you missed it, there are several choice quotes from Barbara Ehrenreich. (And I’ve missed Tess on the radio!)
Thank you for sharing your dream with us. It now belongs to all of us & we will never be the same.
Have been thinking of you and wondering how it is going? So glad to read this post. I leave tomorrow to California for the “Trek for a Cure” hike from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite. Hope to talk (Skype) with you again sometime.
Audrey – So great to hear from you. Can’t wait to hear how your Trek for a Cure goes. Very best of luck to you:) I look forward to catching up soon! Terri
wow Terri, SO INSPIRING..I love to share your stories > thank-you for giving your self and setting an example of selfless humanity. You make people want to do better and i love this new message:) Just do ….. so simple isn’t ?
Marie – Thank you so much for you comment. I truly appreciate it and I look forward to keeping in touch. Just do. Just try. Just learn. Just grow:) Have a wonderful week! Terri
Terri this is such a wonderful post. Your attitude is so refreshing. This need we have for perfection and the way you expressed the truth about what happened before this perfect moment was captured on camera.
I am so glad you connected with Renn in LA (who I must also meet one day!) and I am sorry I missed you (since that’s where my home is) as I am in Dublin where I had the pleasure of connecting with Marie! Please let me know if and when you will be in LA again. It’s so wonderful to see you fulfilling your dreams. Your enthusiasm is such a breath of fresh air and is filling me with the joy of knowing I am on the way to seeing my dreams become reality.
I will keep saying your beautiful quote: No matter how shiny things look from the outside, nothing is perfect. So, go do the thing you feel you’re meant to do.
Thank you for sharing your dream and inspiring us to have dreams of our own happen. xoxox
Susan,
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment. It is a pleasure connecting with you and I hope to meet you in person soon. It looks like the stars may be aligning for me to be out in LA again mid-August. Let’s connect and find a way to meet in person. I’d love to hear more about your dream and trade stories.
Hugs!
Terri

Susan and Terri and Zapladybug and Lori @regrounding, let’s try and all meet in August!
How diud I miss this? Susan Zager and I had the wonderful good fortune of meeting last week in Dublin and this was very much a conversation we had. So glad to see that Susan has connected with you here – she is so wonderful and I would be thrilled to bits if you all met up as Renn suggests. Promise me you will try to make it happen and I will be there with you all in spirit xxx
Marie – I was so happy to see you and Susan meet up. It reminded me of us getting together over a year ago. Wow – how time flies. I wish we could beam you over to LA. Oh the fun we would have. We will definitely try to make it happen and keep you posted. Hugs! T xo
It made me think of our weekend together too. I was telling Susan all about it. I also told her she really should try to hook up with you!
Thank you my friend. I will definitely hope to see Susan when I’m in LA in August. Sending big hugs to you:) T xo
Done is better than perfect 🙂 I like that. When I think of perfection I think of the people I love, the places I love . . .and never the fine details. Perfect is in the action, feeling like you learned, showing up for the challenge – and you are doing all those things so brilliantly. Keep it up, Terri!
So poetic – “perfection is the action, feeling like you learned, showing up for the challenge” – I LOVE IT. Thank you for sharing your voice. Big hugs! T xo
