When Is It Time To Throw In The Towel?
Chasing dreams is serious business. Whether it involves finding a soul mate, leaping in a brand new career direction, or starting a grassroots movement; turning a dream into reality is not a fairytale waltz into the sunset. Sure, it fills your life with passion and purpose, but it’s also liable to cause you occasional emotional upheaval, intermittent sacrifice, and maybe even a regular dose of financial stress (at least at the beginning).
Yet, in our polished for public consumption culture, we don’t talk about the hurdles that come packaged up with the highs. No one posts the gritty truth on Facebook about navigating the choppy waters of uncertainty. Imagine a world where some of our status updates looked something like this:
- What if I’m crazy to think I can find a way to get paid to do the work I believe in?
- My job is killing me a little more every day, but I’m too terrified to quit.
- I am worried I’m going to end up alone because my relationship isn’t working out the way I thought it would.
Instead we share our successes and bury our insecurities. We gloss over the sleepless nights of strategic planning, or the string of bad dates, or the wish that someone (anyone) could help us know whether the path we’re on is the right one. (more…)

I have this simple little dream – to be with my husband and not feel torn between our families. But that simple little dream has caused huge upheaval (along with cancer as a HUGE prompt) in a comfortable situation. Essentially, it caused us to give up the easy road and move back to Canada. Every few days we ask ourselves if we’re crazy, if this is the right choice for us, because it has NOT been easy.
All I know is I’m serving what’s in my heart. It’s hard, but so long as it’s true to what’s in the heart, I need to have faith it will be okay. Couple that with hard work, learning, scrounging for opportunities, and taking breaks too – and life is exciting.
Looking back, I have a feeling there is only ever one path, and it’s the path that’s created beneath our feet with each step forward. ~Catherine
Catherine, I love your last paragraph. Beautifully written. It leaves no room for regrets. xo, eileen
Catherine,
Thank you for your beautiful comment. Simple dreams sometimes cause such huge upheaval, but I’m so happy to hear that you’re continuing to serve your heart and trusting that it is what it needs to be. We create the path every day. Thank you for sharing this path with me! Terri
Wonderful post and so insightful. So many of us take the safe road and, in doing so, give up dreams. Realizing dreams is risky. I so admire you for following your passion and doing what your soul directs you to. I love this post. Thank you.
Beth – Thank you for continuing to inspire me with your posts and your ability to keep walking towards the dream. Each day, each step, we get there. Big hugs. Terri xo
Thought provoking post. Sometimes it’s not easy to take the road you want, but if you really try, you can break free of “miserable comfort.”
Thank you so much Eileen! I appreciate your comment. “Miserable comfort” – that is a beautiful phrase. Terri
Great post Terri, thanks for sharing! Self-belief and belief in what you are doing is definitely the way forward; when more doors open than close we’re definitely on the right path and for the closed doors we just have to figure out a different way to open them. Your journey has been and will continue to be incredible! xx
Thank you Elaine. We just have to find a different way to open them. I like that!
