Why JOY Matters & How To Get It Back When You’ve Hit A Wall…
When is the last time your life felt carefree? Perhaps back in your childhood when no one needed anything from you and you could sleep late, dance to your favourite Michael Jackson song, or ride your bike until you were breathless? When a good day meant fun instead of productivity?
The other day I face planted into a brick wall – metaphorically speaking that is – and remembered how exhausting dream chasing can be. I had hoped my recent trip to LA would result in funding for the foundation and by the final day, I had to face the truth that it hadn’t. Instead of feeling excited about the future and proud of how far we’ve come, I stood nose to nose with a higher wall that must be climbed. I wanted to punch the wall, the obstacles, or really anyone in my path. Thankfully, I slept it off, woke up the next day, and reminded myself that I don’t have to scale the whole wall today. I just have to move an inch in the right direction.
Maybe you know what I’m talking about? Starting anything – a business, a non-profit, or even a relationship comes with unexpected frustrations and moments of feeling like it will N-E-V-E-R happen. We push and strive and challenge ourselves – all necessary steps in turning dreams into reality – but sometimes we stay so focused on the end goal that we forget to leave any room for joy, laugher, or fun. I’m wishing you as much FUN as you can manage. It becomes hard, I know it. You are quite right in recollecting days where satisfaction was linked to fun, and not productivity. I guess that’s an inevitable change, but once in a while – it is so very good to be carefree. So, I wish you moments of no responsibility, and total EASE.
Good luck on your travels! ~Catherine
Catherine – THANK YOU! I’m wishing us both FUN for 2014. Can’t wait to hear what is bringing you joy over the next few months. Thanks for being a part of the journey:) Terri
Terri I really understand what you are writing about when it comes to questioning everything I am doing. I was stuck on something and luckily that’s why I let myself sleep on the problem and gave myself enough time to sort out the solution. I also am having so many questions as to whether this is what I really want to do. I love your words of ease and joy and I think we forget that our bodies and minds have been through a lot from treatment. This disease takes a toll. What you are doing is so wonderful and it’s so important to stop and appreciate all of the things you have accomplished. Even though I want to help others if I don’t help myself I am useless. It’s so important to keep the fun in our lives. You are so right about stopping to enjoy things and not just making our days about productivity especially if it brings no joy. It was so much fun meeting you and I look forward to seeing you again when you return to LA. Much love and light – Susan.
Susan – So great to hear from you and to have another friend and compatriot in the big dreaming space. We will get there. Once inch at a time:) Big love and light to you! Terri
