We must be willing to let go of the life we had planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us. ~ Joseph Campbell

A Fresh Chapter’s mission to heal the emotional scars of cancer through volunteerism, meaningful travel, and activities designed to reframe adversity and redefine what’s possible – all while creating a ripple effect of good in communities at home and around the world. This year, A Fresh Chapter is excited to return to Peru for our fourth Peru Odyssey program well as pilot our first Global Emerging Leaders Program in Kenya. We are incredibly grateful to Eli Lilly and Company for partnering with us on both of our 2019 programs.

Redefine What Is Possible After Cancer. Applications Open Until Feb 28th, 2019

Two Different Opportunities:

Peru Odyssey Program: If you are a cancer patient, survivor, or caregiver seeking a meaningful volunteer experience to help you process the emotional scars of cancer as well as explore what’s possible for you now – the Peru Odyssey Program is designed for you!

Global Emerging Leaders Program: AFC is expanding our international model to Kenya with our first Global  Emerging Leaders Program. Through an immersive, cross-cultural, peer-to-peer advocacy initiative, AFC is committed to working with key Kenyan stakeholders to co-design the AFC framework to meet local needs. This program is the first in a broader 5-year initiative which, by 2025, aims to touch a minimum of 10,000 Kenyans impacted by cancer. If you are a cancer advocate – either in the U.S. or Kenya – you could be part of this revolutionary new model.

Applications for both programs are open until February 28, 2019

Peru Odyssey (November 2-16, 2019)

The Peru Odyssey program is a partnership between A Fresh Chapter and Eli Lilly & Company’s Connecting Hearts Abroad Program. Half of the program’s participants are employees of Lilly who have experienced cancer first-hand and the second half are selected from the broader A Fresh Chapter community. Together, we will spend our mornings volunteering with community-based projects and cancer support organizations and our afternoons experiencing cultural events, activities and group sessions designed to help you explore the emotional impact of cancer and envision how you want to reimagine the next chapter of your life.

On the weekend, we will travel to the Sacred Valley for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Machu Picchu. As with all AFC programs, you will receive the support of our dedicated team before, during, and after the trip. In addition to an unforgettable 2-week volunteer travel experience, our Odyssey Programs include a comprehensive framework of support, tools and resources to help you heal the emotional scars of cancer and expand your story far beyond the disease. You can learn more here about the Peru Odyssey Program.

Kenya Global Emerging Leaders (September 11 – 25, 2019)

This revolutionary new program will bring together three diverse groups – six Americans impacted by cancer, six Kenyans impacted by cancer, and six employees of our 2019 partner organization, Eli Lilly and Company – for the first immersive, cross-cultural, peer-to-peer advocacy initiative of its kind. Together, our 18 participants will play a leadership role in locally-led cancer awareness and education events, volunteer in Kenyan communities, experience AFC’s innovative psychosocial support model, and participate in the initial discovery and development phase of an AFC Toolkit adapted for Kenya. As with all AFC programs, you will receive the support of our dedicated team before, during, and after the on-site portion of the program.

Creating A Ripple Impact of Good As An AFC Fellow

Each of the applicants to this program will be applying for a 1-year Fellowship with A Fresh Chapter. In addition to the six employees from Lilly, the 2019 Global Emerging Leaders Program in Kenya has a total of 12 Fellowship Spots: six for U.S. applicants and six for Kenyan applicants. The selected Fellows will participate in a 2-week on-site volunteer experience, develop new leadership skills, and engage with the AFC Team as we explore customizing our programming to serve Kenyan patients, survivors, and caregivers. Instead of a Program Fee, each person awarded a fellowship will commit to a variety of activities over the course of a 1-year period. You can learn more here about the Kenya Global Emerging Leaders Program.

We are excited to host both of our diverse 2019 programs and look forward to receiving applications.
