Gertrude: The Fearless Critic
Do you have a friend who always has to have the last word? Someone whose lofty ideals and judgemental comments cause the little hairs on the back of your neck to rise?
Gertrude and I go WAY back. I can’t actually remember a time in my life without her. I am sure she has good intentions, but her sharp tongue, ambitious streak, and condescending tone make my skin prickle in irritation.
She second guesses my decisions; whispers about me behind my back, and encourages me to work harder, run faster, and act braver. When I feel particularly low, she lectures me about staying focused on my goals. She suggests that if I do everything perfectly, I will find love; achieve success; and fit into my skinniest jeans.
