Cancer is Life-Changing. So Are We

A Fresh Chapter (AFC) is a survivor-led nonprofit* that is changing the landscape of cancer support around the globe. Our evidence-informed approach transforms the adversity of cancer into an opportunity for people to live healthier, more meaningful lives. Our mission is to help people address the complex emotions of cancer by giving them the skills, support, and community to process their experience and move forward with resilience and purpose — whether living with or beyond cancer.

AFC bridges the gap in cancer care by focusing on the whole person – not just their disease. Our global community fosters connection, purpose, and growth.

Through our free, peer-facilitated programs, we offer individuals impacted by cancer — patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates alike — skills, empowerment, and a deep sense of belonging to heal the emotional scars of cancer, catalyzing a powerful ripple impact on families and communities around the world.

AFC is a project of Social & Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), a California-based 501(c)3.

CURRENT & UPCOMING PROGRAMS

A Fresh Chapter offers both virtual and onsite programs. Sponsorship opportunities for these programs encompass an array of customizable benefits, including employee attendance/engagement opportunities and corporate recognition. In addition, many of our programs can be customized to support your employees who have been impacted by cancer.

Ignite Experience Read More

A 10-week virtual education program open to cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers across the cancer continuum.

This scalable, evidence-informed educational and psychosocial support model is built by, for, and with the cancer community. Through a focus on skill-building, Ignite aims to improve resilience, empowering participants to navigate the constant uncertainty of cancer and thereby improve their quality of life. Each week, participants engage in a 60-minute facilitated session introducing a new skill, followed by reflection exercises, activities, and partner discussions with fellow cohort members to practice and integrate the skill. The program builds upon these skills progressively, providing a structured framework for participants to process their cancer experience and develop the necessary emotional tools to thrive — a foundation from which they can effectively support others impacted by cancer. Ignite is rooted in peer-to-peer support, growth, and emotional healing from adversity. Alumni of the Ignite Experience have the opportunity to apply to participate in our peer-facilitator training program, Amplify. Amplify blends curriculum and practical experience facilitating our virtual Ignite Experience and onsite Mizizi Workshops in Kenya, allowing AFC to grow our facilitation team and scale our programs.

Africa Elevate Fellowship Read More

A yearlong virtual cross-cultural leadership program that includes an immersive two-week experience onsite in Kenya.

Each year, AFC brings together employees of our partner organizations with Kenyan and U.S.-based cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates. All selected participants work in cross-cultural teams on vital projects aimed at advancing AFC’s important work in Africa. In 2024, this includes the development and delivery of AFC’s inaugural two-day Summit held during the onsite portion of the program. The Summit will provide AFC Alumni and African cancer advocates skill-transfer and professional development opportunities, with a particular focus on relationship-based policy advocacy and leadership skills.

It's been an amazing opportunity and honor to be part of what AFC is building in Kenya, knowing new people, listening to their stories, and creating connections that will last for a long time. It has been meaningful collaborating and working towards a common goal of providing psychosocial support programming to African patients, survivors and caregivers. It's a reflection of what the world should be: all together, working to improve the world, no matter your age, gender, or origin. — Roberto Rapado, Lilly Senior Manager - Automation Engineering

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Since 2015, AFC has partnered with Eli Lilly and Company on programs in both Peru and Kenya. In 2019, AFC launched the first Elevate Fellowship in Kenya in collaboration with Lilly. The work we initiated onsite in 2019 continued virtually until 2023, when AFC had the opportunity to further collaborate with Lilly for our second Africa Elevate Fellowship. Since 2019, this partnership has had a direct impact in the lives of over 2,700 Africans impacted by cancer.

The Elevate Fellowship Program is an immersive, cross-cultural leadership and advocacy experience that offers our partners a partnership opportunity that blends corporate social responsibility, cross-cultural leadership development for employees, and the opportunity to better understand the lived experiences of patients, survivors, and caregivers from around the globe.

Lilly's partnership with A Fresh Chapter has helped strengthen our global employee volunteer program and enriched the lives of Lilly volunteers who embark on this unique experience with fellow cancer survivors. As a global healthcare company, Lilly strives to make life better. Our collaboration with A Fresh Chapter gives Lilly volunteers the opportunity to care for people living in impoverished communities. And it gives Lilly the opportunity to support the emotional healing of our employees who are recovering from cancer. — Kathryn Hudson, Eli Lilly and Company - Program Manager for Connecting Hearts Abroad
