“You Are Not the Jack-Ass Whisperer”
This morning started with a jarring cell phone alarm and a thick, more-than-the-1-allotted-(cancer-survivor)-glass-of-red-wine last night headache. Since 7am this morning, I’ve been in a car, on a ferry, in a bus, on a train, in a plane, and in a van. For a few minutes earlier today, I felt like one of the wind blown cartoon cats from a Richard Scarry book.
I know I promised you details on my workshop with Brene Brown. I have not forgotten. I also have a great story for you and if it wasn’t for the throbbing between my temples (self induced I know) and the churning of my stomach (nerves or too much of my Aunt’s delicious food last night? I’m not sure), I would herd the thoughts out of my mind and onto the screen.
But for now, I will settle for telling you that three and a half hours with Brene felt like 5 minutes. I laughed (sometimes knowingly), took 17 pages of notes, and by the end, wanted to invite her over for dinner so we could trade stories and become brand new, stay up way too late talking about life, friends.
Hopefully by Friday, I will be able to distill down my endless scrawled journal entries into a few nuggets of wisdom. For now, here’s my new favourite Scott Stratten quote that Brene shared with us:
“Do not try to win over the haters. You are not the jack ass whisperer.” (more…)

I love Brene’ Brown, just signed up for her eCourse that starts on Monday, and LOVE that quote! I really needed to hear it today, (every day?). I am going to type it up and tape it to my computer at work–where everyone can see it 😉 Can’t wait to hear about your workshop. Feel better, Terri’s head.
Another fan of Brene Brown! Isn’t she wonderful? Last year she spoke at the Life Beyond Cancer Retreat in Austin. She’s funny, poignant and warm. She relayed a great anecdote about a fellow airplane passenger who asked her what she did. Brene told her she’d done a study about women and shame, the other passenger, a woman, thought she said “women and chains” and proceeded to tell her about having been arrested:)
I am only catching up on your blog today Terri..but it’s so spooky that you are writing about Brene Brown this week, as I featured her book as my book of the week last week! Anyway, I hope you do find the time and the energy to write some more about what you learned from her workshop – I know that with Brene’s teachings and your perspective, it will be something I will definitely want to read!
I love Richard Scarry! I read that book to my son millions of time. His favorite was the double-page spread of the huge crash. Thanks for reminding me of that sweet memory! I’m also now in love with the quote about the haters. Just had a rotten week with mean-girl drama, which I really thought I was done with in high school; the timing of that quote is perfect! I may have to get a t-shirt made that says “I am not a jackass whisperer!”
