practical skills and tools for advancing health equity in a meaningful way

I.D.E.A. Into Action

As cancer advocates and non-profit leaders, we are in a position to create real change when it comes to reducing health disparities, but many smaller non-profits and independent advocates don’t have the resources to develop our own inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (I.D.E.A.) strategy and training programs. There is also a lack of opportunity to convene advocacy groups or individuals to learn from each other and share best practices.

With the launch of AFC’s new program, I.D.E.A. Into Action, we will continue to partner with Julye Williams, founder of the Project 2043 Institute, to develop a scalable interactive learning model to help nonprofits target and advance their health equity goals. This proof of concept will focus on AFC as the case study. The broader initiative aims to move nonprofits beyond awareness and into accountability for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (I.D.E.A.) initiatives that promote equity within cancer support and survivorship.

Key Program Objectives
  • Create an interactive learning model for nonprofits to apply health equity across program activities.
  • Identify and develop the necessary wrap-around tools and support for other nonprofits to successfully implement this model.
  • Capture feedback to understand the impact and challenges of incorporating a health equity lens within a small nonprofit and how the program could be evolved for future cohorts.
  • Develop a multi-faceted measurement system to demonstrate:
    • The personal impact of this interactive learning model on participants
    • The impact on the broader organization and how the work translates into increased health equity for populations served.
  • Determine how to make this model scalable for delivery to other small nonprofits.
I cannot express enough gratitude for the opportunity to join AFC’s I.D.E.A team. The training has been important and eye-opening, and although I have SO much left to learn, it’s been an amazing opportunity and a great step forward. Even just walking down the street, I’m noticing how much more aware I am of barriers. I don’t think I’ll ever see the world the same again, and that switch in perspective is so valuable to me and has made me even more committed to doing this work. — Shayla Frinton, Vancouver Island, Canada
