Mizizi Workshops
About A Fresh Chapter
A Fresh Chapter (AFC), founded in 2013, is a survivor-led organization that is changing the landscape of cancer support around the world. Our structured, peer-facilitated programs offer skills, empowerment, and a deep sense of belonging. Our vision is to empower every African impacted by cancer with the emotional skills and ongoing support to process what they have been through and transform adversity into possibility.
Mizizi Workshops
Overview
Mizizi workshops, first launched in 2022, are half-day interactive in-person workshops that bring AFC’s skills and concepts to grassroots communities across Kenya. Participants gain access to tools and frameworks for increasing emotional awareness and building resilience, while having the opportunity to connect with others in their community affected by cancer. These workshops are led by Kenyan AFC Facilitators who are personally impacted by cancer, receive ongoing training, and translate AFC concepts into local languages.

Mizizi Workshop for Men
Friday, November 8, 2024
8:00 AM – 2:30 PM EAT
For a long time, I had looked forward to [meeting] someone who has had a similar experience as me. I attended the Mizizi workshop and [afterwards] I felt like a different person. I had changed, I had gained courage. We face a lot of stigmatization. It was a wonderful experience connecting, sharing ideas, and learning from other people who you share the same experience with. It has been a blessing to me, my family, and everyone around me because whatever I learn, I go share out. — 2023 Mizizi Workshop Participant |
In 2024, AFC has the goal of serving over 1,000 patients, survivors, and caregivers through Mizizi workshops across Kenya, as well as developing the content for two new Mizizi workshops.
A Part of the Broader Vision
Since 2019, AFC has partnered with African survivors and advocates to customize all of our local programs for the African cultural context. Programs are led by local AFC-trained facilitators who have been personally impacted by cancer. AFC is building this model with a vision of scaling it across Sub-Saharan Africa. We currently serve patients, survivors, and caregivers from multiple African countries through our virtual programs and plan to launch our first grassroots Mizizi workshop in South Africa in 2025.
In addition to Mizizi Workshops, other programs include:
- The Ignite Experience: A facilitated, 10-week virtual educational program that offers resources and interpersonal building blocks to help people impacted by cancer thrive, even in the midst of adversity.
- AFC Leaders: This 6-week foundational leadership and professional development program addresses the human side of leadership through offering skills to build emotional intelligence, compassionate leadership, inclusion, and resilience.
- Elevate Fellowship: An immersive, cross-cultural leadership and advocacy program that aims to build AFC’s program capacity in Kenya by investing in and elevating local leaders.
- Empower Workshops: 1-2 hour virtual workshops that offer new tools, resources, and perspectives to help balance both cancer and life.
Since beginning our work in Africa in 2019, AFC has:
- Offered more than 140+ survivors, caregivers, and patients access to the Africa Ignite Experience.
- Provided 46 alumni of the Africa Ignite Experience foundational leadership and professional development opportunities through AFC Leaders.
- Empowered 22 Kenyans with the skills needed to help facilitate AFC’s Programs.
- Developed and launched the first-of-its-kind community-based workshop focused on emotional support.
- Directly served more than 1,500 Africans impacted by cancer.
