India Odyssey: Volunteering
Volunteering
Based on your skills and interests, we will match you with a local community project and you will spend two weeks giving your time and energy to people in the developing world. You will be placed with at least one other A Fresh Chapter volunteer and be given guidelines and support – as well as encouragement to use your own initiative! – to make the most of the experience. During volunteering days, you will leave by 8 a.m. and will return by lunch.
Some of the volunteer assignments include:
- participating in English lessons at a school for children living in one of Delhi’s many depressed areas
- working with mentally or physically challenged people at Mother Teresa’s Home For the Dying & The Destitute
- assisting at a neighborhood daycare or special needs school by teaching, serving meals, and/or helping improve their facility
In addition, in 2019, we will be working with our in-country partner Bela Singh and a local cancer support organization to determine opportunities to volunteer directly in the oncology space. More details will be available soon. Whether you are volunteering with children, a place like Mother Teresa’s, or with a cancer organization, you will not only act as a volunteer, but also as a Cancer Ambassador in communities where cancer is often veiled in shame, secrecy, and stigma.
All selected participants will have the opportunity to speak to an A Fresh Chapter alumni about their volunteering experiences. This will be a great opportunity to hear more about the types of volunteering activities, the growth that can be experienced during volunteering, and the unique cross-cultural bonds that ensue.
