Peru Odyssey: Volunteering
Volunteering
Based on your skills and interests, CCS will match you with a local community project and you will spend two weeks giving your time and energy to people in the developing world. You will be placed with at least one other A Fresh Chapter volunteer and be given guidelines and support – as well as encouragement to use your own initiative! – to make the most of the experience. During volunteering days, you will leave by 8 a.m. and will return between 1-1:30pm.
Some of the volunteer assignments include:
- supporting families impacted by cancer at a home that provides lodging and meals
- working with childhood cancer patients at a Lima hospital
- assisting at a neighborhood daycare by teaching and/or helping improve their facility
- working at a center for senior citizens by serving meals, interacting with the seniors, cleaning, and accompanying staff on home visits
You will not only act as a volunteer, but also as a Cancer Ambassador in communities where cancer is often veiled in shame, secrecy, and stigma.
In addition to your mornings spent volunteering, our group will spend one afternoon with patients/survivors/caregivers from a local cancer support organization and create dialogue about cancer beyond borders.
All selected participants will have the opportunity to speak to an A Fresh Chapter alumni about their volunteering experiences. This will be a great opportunity to hear more about the types of volunteering activities, the growth that can be experienced during volunteering, and the unique cross-cultural bonds that ensue.
